The company was formed when two long-standing, rival British music businesses merged to avoid a costly price war. "Boosey & Hawkes was created in October 1930, when two rival companies - Boosey & Co. and Hawkes & Son - joined forces." -- [Instagram].
The histories of the two original family businesses date back much further:
- Boosey & Company: Roots trace back to the 1760s when John Boosey opened a music lending library in London, though Thomas Boosey formally established the music business in 1816.
- Hawkes & Son: Founded in 1865 by William Henry Hawkes, who was Queen Victoria's head trumpeter.
